1920 Census shows his father born in Germany and mother in France. He immigrated in 1898 and by 1902 was a naturalized citizen.
The 1930 census shows him as a boarder in the household of Arther F. and Mary C. Miller (difficult to read), as age 79, and his parents both born in France.
Terrie Lea Herbette states, "I know that my dad says that John was a stowaway and landed in New Orleans, hid until his ship left and then did who-knows-what and that he was about 12 at the time. I don't know what ship he came over on, or anything about his family."
