John MURPHY

His father came from Glasgow, Scotland.
John Murphy, William’s father, married the daughter of Tobias Furr and operated a dry goods, hardware and medicine store in Salsbury. In 1824 he opened a store in Concord which he closed in 1826. He became a director of Salisbury's first cotton mill when it was established in the south square in 1839. The cotton mill was never successful and closed in the 1840s. It was purchased by the Confederate government in 1861 and used as a prison until burned by Gen. George Stoneman at the end of the conflict.
