Elizabeth D. Mason, 91, of Roanoke, Va., passed away at home on Tuesday, June 2, 2009. She was born March 12, 1918, in Roanoke. She worked as a secretary for Walter Woods when he was the mayor of Roanoke and became involved in the Democratic Party. She later served as the secretary of the Roanoke City Democratic Committee for 26 years. She was a stay at home mom until her children were in high school, when she returned to work as a Roanoke City assistant school librarian working with special children. She was an active member of the Woodlawn United Methodist Church for over 40 years. She was active in the Cub Scout program at the church for many years, receiving the Silver Beaver Award for her service. She was married to her beloved husband, W.F. (Bill) Mason from 1939 until his death in 1998. She is survived by her two children, Betty M. Burrows, of Longwood, Fla.; and her son, W.F. Mason Jr., of Roanoke; three grandchildren; five greatgrandchildren; and many special friends. She was preceded in death by her sister; her parents; a son-in-law; a daughter-in-law; and a grandchild. She was very devoted to her husband, her children, her church and scouting. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Woodlawn United Methodist Church. Friends are welcome to call on Thursday, June 4, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday, June 5, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel, Brambleton Avenue, Roanoke. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Woodlawn United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Louis M. Strickler officiating.
