Death
Mary Harris Furr, age 62, of Buchanan, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her family. Mary was born on November 16, 1963, and lived a life defined by devotion, kindness, and quiet strength. She retired after many dedicated years as a billing administrator with New River Electrical Corporation, where she was respected and cherished by colleagues and friends alike. Above all else, Mary treasured time spent with her family and friends. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life—horseback riding, gardening, reading, and even mowing her grass. Thursdays held a special place in her heart, as they were lovingly reserved for time with her granddaughter, Maci, a tradition she held dear. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard Columbus Furr II. She is survived by her loving parents, Dennis and Barbara Harris; her children, Stephen Austin and Brooke Whitehead; Sam Austin and wife Caitlyn; Brittany Gordon and husband Jason; and her three treasured grandchildren, Maci, Camden, and Kason. She is also survived by her siblings: Deke Harris and wife Kara; Leigh Delp and husband Jeff; Julie Harris; Juanita Sanchez and husband John; and Fleeda Caldwell. Mary leaves behind many nieces and nephews, her cherished “soccer moms,” dear friends, and her extended family at New River Electrical Corporation. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 16, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. and 5:00–7:00 p.m. at Rader Funeral Home in Daleville, Virginia. A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Saturday, January 17, at 11:00 a.m., with burial to follow at Godwin Cemetery. Flowers may be sent to Rader Funeral home and memorial contributions may be made in Mary’s honor to Johns Hopkins Pancreatic Cancer Center, Shriners Children’s Hospital, the American Heart Association, or Shield Chaplaincy. Mary’s love, warmth, and gentle spirit will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her.Endnotes
