Marriage
Miss Evelyn Jackie Furr, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. 0. Furr of Greensboro, became the bride of Ensign Hugh S. Johnson Jr., son of Mrs. Ethel Southerland Johnson and the late Hugh S. Johnson of Rose Hill, Saturday afternoon, January 29th at three o’clock in the Chapel of the First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, with the Rev. Crowe, pastor of the church, of officiating. The organist of the church, Cpl. William Watkins of Camp Davis played the traditional wedding marches. The Chapel was decorated with palms, white gladiola, and white candles. The bride, given in marriage by Mr. W. G. Farmer, a friend of the bride and a cousin of the groom, wore a heavenly blue wool suit with navy and white accessories, and a corsage of white, yellow throated, Orchid. Mr. F. T. Johnson, of Hertford, uncle of the groom, was best man. Following the ceremony the bride and groom left for Corpus Christi, Texas. Mrs. Johnson attended Elise Academy, Hemp, and was a graduate nurse of James Walker Memorial Hospital, Wilmington. Ensign Johnson was graduated from Rose Hill High School, attended Oak Ridge Military Institute and Motts Business School in Wilmington. He is now stationed at Rodd Field Instructor’s School, Corpus Christi, Texas, where they will make their home.Death
ROSE HILL Evelyn "Jackie" F. Johnson, 84, of Rose Hill died Friday, September 10, 2004, at New Hanover Regional Hospital in Wilmington. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Monday, September 13, 2004, at Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Jackie attended nursing school at James Walker Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, N.C., graduating in 1943. She worked with Dr. George P. Matthews for 30 plus years. Jackie nursed the entire community and beyond. She gave selflessly to family, friends and strangers. Those who were fortunate to know and love her know the story of her boundless gifts of love. Mrs. Johnson is survived by a son, Vann Stewart Johnson and wife Sandra of Raleigh; daughters, Tanya J. Shelton and husband Sonny of Raleigh; Sara J. Brown and husband Joel of Wilmington; Evelyn J. DeVane and husband Andy of Rose Hill and Helen Johnson: husband Warren Hepler of Wallace; sister-in-law, Dorothy Sandlin; grandchildren, Scott Johnson and fiancee Lisa Deering, Heather Lehto and husband Wayne; Sunny Biasi and husband Duane; Megan Phillips; Sara Evans DeVane and Rachel Devane; and great-grandchildren, Anna Stewart Lehto, Ernmi Lehto, Sonny Lehto and Davis Biasi; and numerous nieces and nephews; and life long friends, Jewell Cottle and Eva Newkirk; special nephew, Jimmy Sandlin and wife, LuAnne and their sons, Michael and Ryan. Mrs. Johnson was proceeded in death by her husband, Hugh Stewart Johnson, Jr.; and her parents, Oscar Albert Furr and Sara Lambert Furr; brothers and sisters, Selma Tucker, Verna Almond, Vann Furr and Betty Nall. In lieu of flowers send donations to: James Sprunt Foundation, c/o Tom Fife, Post Office Box 398, Kenansville, N.C. 28349 to establish the Evelyn "Jackie" Johnson Nursing Scholarship Fund.
