Furr was a graduate of Callaway High School in Jackson. After studying political science at the University of Southern Mississippi and Mississippi State University, Furr joined the U.S. Air Force. He completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. During his military career, Furr was a member of the U.S. Air Force Security Forces stationed in Washington, D.C. at Boling Air Force Base, and was a member of the Air Force’s initial phase covert operations that rescued American hostages in Iran and later in the U.S. special operations in Grenada. Furr later joined the U.S. Army and served with distinction on active duty during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. Commendations included the Army Service Ribbon, Army Lapel Button, National Defense Service Medal, and Southeast Asia Service Medal with Bronze Star. Furr was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army upon completion of his service. After his military career, Furr was a sports enthusiast who traveled to major sporting events in the U.S. and across the globe as a spectator witnessing Dennis Connor winning the America’s Cup from Australia – but remained true to his Mississippi State University Bulldogs. He also enjoyed traveling with his family to over 50 countries and photography. Carl Ray, Jr.’s great passion was fellowship with his fellow veterans.
