Death

STATESVILLE — Mr. Grady Baxter McHone, 89, of Statesville, passed away Monday, October 19, 2015, at Gordon Hospice House following a brief illness. Mr. McHone was born in Toast, NC on October 11, 1926, and was the son of the late Shelby McHone and Vasie Nichols McHone. He was a graduate of Franklin High School and on December 24, 1949, he married Mattie Elizabeth Gravely McHone and together they celebrated 65 years of marriage until his death. Mr. McHone was a veteran of the U.S. Navyand served during WWII on the USS Lavaca. Mr. McHone was a man who loved family gatherings and spending time with family and friends in both Surry and Iredell Counties. He was the family handyman and gladly fixed anything that needed fixing and was an avid Tarheel fan and enjoyed fishing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Hunter and Albert McHone, a niece, Sheila McHone Hawks, and a nephew, Bobby Gravely. Along with his wife Mattie, he is survived by his daughter, Karen McHone Furr and husband Neil of Statesville, a granddaughter, Stephanie Furr Carhart and husband Justin of Durham, NC and grandson, Daniel Furr of Statesville. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Rachel Shotwell and husband Alfred of Raleigh, NC, Mary Lee Gravely of Mount Airy, and Colleen Gravely of Denton along with three nieces, three nephews, and numerous great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. McHone will be conducted at 2:00 PM Friday, October 23, 2015, at Wesley Memorial UMC with Rev. Dr. Chris Fitzgerald and Rev. Gervase Hitch officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will visit with friends from 12:30 until 2:00 PM at the church.
