He was born October 24, 1932, in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Following high school, he joined the Air Force and served in Korea. After his honorable discharge, Roland attended the University of Miami. He earned his bachelor's degree in Business in 1956. The fall of that year he married his college sweetheart, Jean Werner at Plymouth Congregational UCC in Coconut Grove, Florida. In 1972 he moved his family to North Carolina, where he was employed as Director of Management Systems for Ivey's stores until his retirement in 1990. Roland was active in several leadership roles at both Plymouth Congregational UCC and Pilgrim Congregational UCC (Holy Covenant Sharon Campus, UCC). Roland volunteered with the Boy Scouts where he shared his love of the outdoors, camping, hiking, and canoeing both as a parent volunteer and as a Scout Master.
