Death

Velma Shelton Hamilton, 101, died at St. Catherine Village on Saturday, August 2, 2008. She was born April 21, 1907 in the Burnell Community in Copiah County to Walter Rowan and Nettie Furr Shelton. A graduate of Wesson High School and Delta State University, Mrs. Hamilton taught elementary school for several years and worked as a home economist in Lamar and Bolivar counties. She then joined the faculty at Delta State where she taught child development. After obtaining her Masters degree at the University of Tennessee, she returned to Delta State as an assistant dean. She also served as the faculty advisor to Delta Delta Delta Sorority and upon her retirement in 19 72 was honored by having an academic building on campus named in her honor. Upon retiring and moving to Jackson, she was a member of Alta Woods United Methodist Church. She was a very loving and unselfish lady who was loved by her family and friends. Her hobby was making delicious candies of all types. She loved taking in stray cats and spending time with her family at her home on Enid Lake, Driftwood Lodge. Her passion was education and was the driving force behind every nephew and niece in her family obtaining a college education. Mrs. Hamilton was preceded in death by her husband, A G Hamilton. She leaves one sister, Elsie Gillis of Memphis, TN; one sister in law, Sarah Shelton of Ridgeland, MS; one son, Albert Hamilton of San Antonio, TX.; one niece; and five nephews. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home on High St. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. with internment at the Shelton Cemetery in Copiah County.
