Death
Mr. Hough of Mint Hill, NC was called to his heavenly home on May 1, 2016. He died at Clear Creek Rehab. He was a long time resident of Mint Hill and had many friends and acquaintances there. He was born in Monroe, NC on May 20, 1940. Ray was preceded in death by his parents Ernest McLarty Hough and Opal Furr Hough and by his sister Jill Barbee. He attended Bethel High School and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He was a CPA and founded the firm of Hough, Carriker and Rowell, PA which later became Hough, Rowell & Short, PA. Ray retired from the firm in 2005. He then worked with his son, Andrew for United Packaging and Industrial. Ray was very active in his present church, Benton Heights Presbyterian, Monroe, NC, serving on the Session, the Diaconate, teaching Sunday school, Church Treasurer, and numerous other committees. He recently worked on the Building Committee at Benton Heights to establish the new church sanctuary. He was a member of Oasis Shrine, Scottish Rites, and Mint Hill Masonic Lodge #742. Ray was a member of the Oasis Clown Unit for over 15 years and received much joy from the children that he met during this time. A great deal of his time was spent serving with charitable organizations: Mint Hill Lions Club, Mint Hill Rotary Club, Masonic activities, Mint Hill Historic Society, Mint Hill Business Association, and the Mint Hill Athletic Association, where he coached boys and girls sports for a number of years. He served on several business boards, American Community Bank, Mint Hill Board of Directors, First Citizens Bank, Mecklenburg Board of Directors, Yadkin Bank Board of Directors, and Levine Senior Center Board of Directors. The Mint Hill Business Association selected him Mint Hill business person of the year. Ray enjoyed hunting, spectator sports and travel with his wife Kay. His greatest joy came from time spent with the grandchildren and following their activities. He leaves behind his friend and greatest love of his life, his wife of 54 years, Kay Dorton Hough. Her love, devoted care and attention were his greatest blessings; his daughter Bonnie Lipke (Douglas) of Evergreen, CO; his son Andrew Hough (Candace) of Mint Hill, NC; his son Jeremy Hough (Tori) of Hendersonville, NC; Grandchildren Dylan, Connor and Jackson Lipke; Madeleine Grace and Camille Hough; and Lilly, Claire and Shepherd Hough. Ray is also survived by his sister, Brenda H. Barbee (Boyce) and numerous nieces and nephews. A visitation with the family will be held from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, Monday, May 9, 2016 at Benton Heights Presbyterian Church, 2701 Concord Hwy, Monroe, NC 28110. A memorial service will immediately follow in the sanctuary at 11:00 am.
