Death

Frank H. Furr Jr. of Dover, DE, died Wednesday, February 2, 2011. He was 81. Born in Lyon, MS on December 22, 1929 to the late Lora Tedford and Frank H. Furr, Frank disembarked Mississippi in 1944 to join the U.S. Army Air Corp the predecessor to today's modern U.S. Air Force. After basic training, Frank was stationed in Washington, D.C. where he met his first wife Arlene Burckhart. Frank and Arlene would begin their adventure with a brief stint in Frankfurt & Wiesbaden, Germany where the first of their four children would be born. Upon leaving Germany, Frank & Arlene were stationed in Dover, DE where Frank would remain for the remainder of his 23 year career in the U.S. Air Force. Frank would eventually retire holding the rank of Technical Sergeant. Through hard work and perseverance, Frank entered the business community, successfully launching business enterprises in the automotive and real estate marketplaces. He was the founding partner of Furr's Tire Service a family operated and well respected automotive services provider for the past 27 years. His other ventures included H&B Real Estate, C&F Enterprises and Delaware Industrials. In 2000, Frank became a widow after 51 years. In 2001, Frank married Janet Schiedt of Dover. Frank and Janet recently enjoyed their 10th anniversary and were happily married until his passing. Throughout his 50+ years of Dover residence, Frank was a loyal participant of Union Lodge #7 AF & AM of Dover, DE, where he served as Worshipful Master in 1968 and 1996; Nur Shrine of Wilmington, DE; Member of the Order of Eastern Star, Victory Chapter #15 of Dover, DE; American Legion; Retired Enlisted Association; Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Singing in America; and St. Andrews Lutheran Church where he served as Church Council President overseeing the construction of the main sanctuary in 1977. He also enjoyed singing in the choir and participating in many other church activities. Frank is survived by his wife Janet; his sister Evelyn Scheider of Atlanta, GA; his brother Hurbert Furr of Chatham, IL; his four children, his son Frank H. III and his wife Carol of Smyrna, DE; his son Daniel "Danny" L. and his wife Sheree of Rehoboth, DE; his daughter Rebecca "Becky" D. of Dover, DE; and his son Timothy "Tim" E. and Louise Thomas of Reston, VA; his daughter, Joyce Lapp and her husband Rick of Dover, DE and their two children Nicholos and Amanda; his grandchildren, Jeffrey "Jeff" A. Joseph, his wife Juleen and two children Kieley Hines and Monica; Frank H. IV, his wife Jodi and their son Frank H. V; Daniel "Danny" L. Jr. and Michael "Mike" E. Furr. A visitation is scheduled for 6-9 pm, Monday, February 7, at TRADER FUNERAL HOME located at 12 Lotus Street, Dover, DE. A Masonic Service will be held at 7:30 pm during the visitation. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 11 am, Tuesday, February 8, at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 1425 N. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE. Friends may call one hour prior to the church service. Interment is scheduled immediately following at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Camden, DE with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Alzheimer's Association , Delaware Valley Chapter, 399 Market Street, Suite 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106 or St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 1425 N. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE.
