Death
MOUNT AIRY - Dr. Carlyle McArthur Shepherd, 63, of 101 River Walk Road, Mount Airy, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 22, 2006, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Dr. Shepherd was born April 5, 1943, in Alleghany County to Grover Walter and Inez Caudill Shepherd. After graduating from Alleghany High School, Carlyle attended Appalachian State Teachers College and earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He later received a Master of Arts degree from Appalachian State Teachers College and earned his doctorate from Nova University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Carlyle was employed at Surry Community College for 30 years. During his tenure at the college, he was a math and physics instructor, a Student Services counselor and dean of College Transfer. After his retirement from the college, he served as executive director of the Surry County Early Childhood Partnership. He has been involved in numerous civic organizations throughout the years and was an avid golfer at Mount Airy Country Club. Dr. Shepherd was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church in Mount Airy, where he was a former deacon and Sunday school teacher. Most importantly, he was a loving and devoted husband and father. Dr. Shepherd was preceded in death by his parents; an infant granddaughter, Elizabeth Kay Hill; and an infant sister. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Margaret Ann Furr Shepherd, of the home; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Carla and Michael Bowman of Richmond, Va.; Angie Shepherd and fiance Gregg Skelly of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and Stacie and Matthew Webster of Portland, Ore.; a son, Bradley Shepherd, of Dallas, Texas; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Holton "H.B." and Bonnie Shepherd of Yadkinville and Hugh Gray and Carolyn Shepherd of Ennice; and five nephews. A service to celebrate Carlyle's life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 25, at First Presbyterian Church. The service will be officiated by Dr. Steve Lindsley. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, June 24, at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Carlyle and Margaret Shepherd Scholarship Fund, c/o Surry Community College Foundation, 630 S.
