Judy Ann FURR
(2 May 1945 - 26 Sep 2019)
I am Fred and Alberta Furr's daughter- I was born Judy Ann Furr on May 2, 1945. My dad was on the ship Leopoldville, a troop ship that sunk during the Europe theater-English channel on Dec 25, 1944. The ship left Southampton, England with 2,200 troops of the 66th infantry division reinforcement for use in the Battle of the Bulge. A British destroyer stayed behind to take on appox 1,200 survivors. The ship was hit by a torpedo from a German U-boat. Some of the survivors leaped from the upper decks across to the destroyer fell into the water and drowned. Others were crushed between the ship's hulls. Approx 800 soldiers were left on the Leopoldville. They were killed by the torpedo blast or drowned. I have an article that was published in the Florida Times-Union, Jacksonville, Thursday July 26, 1984 named wreckage of sunken WW II troop ship found, searcher claims. Clive Cussler, shipwreck hunter said "one of the most tragic and senseless blunders of the world. The Leopoldville is a ship most nations would like to forget.” The Leopoldville was a Belgian line luxury passenger ship press into service as allied troopship during the war. This ship was ill-prepared for disaster the survivors said there were no fire drills or abandon-ship drills for the troops and no instruction in the use of lifeboats or life preserves. Small crafts arrived and took as many troops from the Leopoldville as they could. But three hours after the torpedo struck a bulkhead collapsed and ten minutes later the ship sank. I was told by my mother that my dad was in the department that was torpedoed according to survivors. This was a terrible thing to happen to our young soldiers. My dad was nineteen years old. He never saw me or me him. I have lived all my life wondering about him. I do have his and my mom’s old love-letters. This helps a lot to realize that he was real. I know that there are others in my position and I feel for all of you. But God had a reason for this to happen to so many and we will get to meet these men in heaven. Judy Furr Chunn July 26,2011
