Notes
Death
Mary Evelyn Furr Holbrook went to be with the Lord on October 30, 2025. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband and son, Roy Edgar Holbrook (1921-1987) and Roy Edgar “Eddie” Holbrook, Jr. (1952-2024), her parents, Charles Homer Furr (1898-1943) and Ora Lillie Kirk Furr (1899-1937) and one brother, James Homer Furr (1921-1963). She is survived by her daughter, Mary Evelyn Holbrook Rice and son-in-law, William Kline Rice, Jr. She also leaves behind four grandchildren, William Kline “Trip” Rice, III (Jennifer), Paul Christopher Rice (Leslie), Mary Elizabeth Rice Kunze (Brent), and Nina Katherine Rice, as well as ten great grandchildren, Judah (Ari), Ezra, Micah, Evangeline, Josephine, Noah, Elina, Adelyn, Jonah and Jesse. In addition, she leaves behind two nephews and one niece, Michael Furr, Joseph Fort, and Karen Furr, as well as twelve great-nieces and great-nephews, and many great-great-nieces and nephews. Summing up 102 years of an incredible life is an impossible task. As a devoted wife and mother for most of her life, she worked tirelessly to make sure the needs of her husband and children were met- even going to work as a bookkeeper where she stayed for over twenty years. Keeping family at the center of her life, she and Roy went traveling and camping with the kids throughout the United States and Canada, meeting life-long friends during their journeys. They built a place in Linville Land Harbor and shared many happy times there with their children and grandchildren. After Roy’s passing from cancer, she became an integral part of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. She worked with an abundance of dedicated, hard-working women who cooked, planned and hosted wedding receptions, church events, receptions for the grieving after funerals, bake sales to help the church grow, and prepared elaborate lunches for the Charlotte Civitans. She did all this while still keeping her family a priority and making sure Sunday dinners were always on the table for her children and their families. Saying she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother is not sufficient. Her humility, kindness and generosity left a mark on everyone who knew her. We were blessed to have her for so many years. She is irreplaceable and we are feeling her loss deeply. But we have hope in Christ and know we’ll be together again. A service for Evelyn will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at 11:00AM at McEwen Funeral Service- Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews Mint Hill Road Mint Hill, NC 28227. The family will receive friends following the service. Evelyn will be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery at 1:30PM, 4426 Central Avenue Charlotte, NC 28205.Endnotes
