Notes
Death
THE MENA WEEKLY STAR, 10 March, 1932Thomas H. Philpot, "Uncle Tom," widely known Polk county pioneer, died early Saturday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Hoover, in Dallas Valley. Death followed an illness of only a few days. Had he lived until April 20, "Uncle Tom" would have been 85 years of age. Decedent was the last of seven brothers who settled in the highlands shortly after the ending of the war between the states. They were part of an emigration from their native state of Mississippi, the party settling in the eastern part of Polk county and founding the Cherry Hill settlement. "Uncle Tom" was an uncle of Jesse Philpot, Sr. of Mena, and was known and respected for his kindly courteous ways. For some years he has lived a quiet retired life, visiting among his children in Arkansas and Texas. It is estimated that UncleTom has fully 400 kinfolks, many of whom live outside of Polk county. There are seven daughters and one son surviving. The only local one being Mrs. Hoover in Dallas valley. The remains were taken to the Beasley Funeral home and prepared for burial. Funeral services were held Monday morning at 11 o'clock at Egger, the old home community. Interment was under Masonic auspices at Egger. "UNCLE TOM" PHILPOT AT REST. Burial of Thomas H. Philpot took place at Egger Monday morning. There was a large gathering of relatives and friends of the pioneer. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Bearden, pastor of the Methodist church, with the final rites at the grave in charge of the Masons. Mark P. Olney of Mena headed a delegation of local Masons at the service.
