Hayworth Gift Nets Record $6 Million for Campus Landmark -- Construction Begins on Fine Arts Center

HIGH POINT, N.C., Feb. 21, 2001 - High Point University has begun construction on the long-awaited Charles E. and Pauline Lewis Hayworth Fine Arts Center after two large Hayworth gifts, including a matching challenge, netted a record $6 million for the future campus landmark.

The $4 million gift from Charles and Pauline Hayworth was the largest in university history. The second of the two $2 million gifts was a dollar-for-dollar challenge issued in 1998 that raised an additional $2 million for the new center by the end of last year.

"I am extremely gratified by the way the High Point University community rose to meet this challenge and pleased that construction is under way," Pauline Hayworth said. "This Fine Arts Center continues a long labor of love by my late husband and me, who, though not alumni, have loved High Point University with a passion.

"Though Charles and I made the initial gift, I just felt very strongly that he wanted me to go another step. His father helped establish the college over 75 years ago, and Charles served as chairman of the Board of Trustees with unswerving commitment for years."

Construction began Feb. 1 on the $14 million, state-of-the-art facility that will anchor front campus at the east end of the greensward. Dr. E. Roy Epperson, who has worked closely with the president, dean and faculty on the architectural and construction plans for the project during the past two years, said construction is scheduled for completion in May 2002. The general contractor is Shelco Inc. of Winston-Salem.

The center's neo-Georgian style will maintain the campus's architectural integrity. Crowned with a dome and cupola, the 47, 231-square-foot structure will feature Palladian windows and a columned portico. The three-story building will house the art, music and theater departments and feature a 500-seat theater, an art gallery, classrooms, a computer-assisted design (CAD) laboratory, art studios and music practice rooms. University television and radio stations will also have studios in the center.

"I cannot overemphasize how important the Charles E. and Pauline Lewis Hayworth Fine Arts Center will be for our university and for our community," said Dr. Jacob C. Martinson, university president. "It is obvious they have genuinely loved High Point University because it is such a valuable resource for the city. The timing is perfect as we dive headlong into this new century with great expectations.

"I have been assured that this Fine Arts Center will be the best facility of its kind in North Carolina. It will be the site of important art and music education; it will be the setting for many memorable events and performances; it will be a place of beauty, grace and culture. For it, we are forever grateful to Charles and Pauline Hayworth, and we are honored to have this prominent building bear their names. We are also indebted to the hundreds of other alumni, friends and corporations who gave life to this dream through their generosity." The Hayworths designated an initial gift of $2 million for the fine arts center in 1992. In 1994, the year of Charles Hayworth's death, the university launched the Founders Campaign that raised $41 million in five years with the fine arts center as one of its cornerstone projects. In 1998, Pauline Hayworth issued a challenge to match dollar for dollar all new gifts and pledges toward the project with an offer of an additional $2 million. The challenge was successfully met late last year with several hundred donations, including a sizable leadership gift by Bob and Maggie Stout of Greensboro. Darrell and Phyllis Sechrest, also of Greensboro, made a sizable leadership gift prior to the challenge. Darrell Sechrest, an alumnus, Bob Stout and Hayworth all serve on the university's Board of Trustees.

Pauline Hayworth, a native of Pinehurst, earned a bachelor's degree in English at Queens College in Charlotte and a master's degree in English at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

After teaching for several years, she devoted herself to many causes, especially those related to fine arts and higher education. For example, she helped establish and then served on the Board of Trustees of the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival, a professional theater company in High Point; served on the boards of the Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro and the Literary League of High Point; and is a member of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society of the United Way of Greater High Point.

She currently serves on the Foundation Board of Trustees of the North Carolina Museum of Art and is a member of the Mid-Week Garden Club, where she served five terms as president. She has formerly served on the Board of Directors of Family Service, the American Cancer Society and the American Red Cross. She is a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.

Hayworth remains actively involved with Queens College in Charlotte, serving on the Board of Trustees. Queens has presented her an honorary doctorate degree and five years ago established the Pauline Lewis Hayworth College for Adult Education as a tribute to her numerous contributions and long-standing dedication.

"It was a proud moment when in 1997 Queens graduated the first class of its brightest and best in this adult education program," she said. "I was deeply touched during the first honors ceremony for those adult students who wanted to continue their education while balancing the demands of work and family."

Charles Hayworth Jr., an N.C. State University graduate, served as chairman, president and CEO of a successful group of furniture-related companies. He donated funds for the university's chapel in his father's honor in 1972 and served on the board of trustees for years, including a distinguished tenure as board chairman.

High Point University is a liberal arts institution with approximately 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students at campuses in High Point and Winston-Salem. The university offers 42 undergraduate majors and five graduate-degree programs.
