Individual Details

George Cornelius SHINN

(9 Feb 1859 - 16 Oct 1947)

He was a prominent and public spirited citizen and Methodist, a liberal supporter of his church, Center Grove, which he served as steward for many years.

George opened and operated a general store called Shinn & Widenhouse. He co-owned the store with Paul Widenhouse. Laura suggested a post office be placed in the store. With the help of Mollie Dusenberry, the Postmistress in Concord, Mr. and Mrs. Shinn "officially" established a postal center in Shinn & Widenhouse. In honor of its first and only Postmaster, the land around the store was named Georgeville. George Shinn became the sole owner of the store by 1930 and remained Postmaster until the post office was replaced by a rural route. George closed the store before his death in 1947, at the age of 88, but George's grandson, Turner Shinn, reopened the store in 1945. The store is still standing in Georgeville but is under another name.
