Reference you inquiry in the Clarke Co. Historical Society's concerning the Wilkerson -Osborn (e)families in Clarke County.
Although I am not a relative, I do have some knowledge of Wilkerson-Osborne family to which you refer and feel obliged to share with you he information that I have. I too am a researcher and know that a small bit of information can be of help at times.
I will begin with the family that I knew best. Victoria Osborne (she used the E) married Caleb Blake Sawyer in Clarke County prior to 1898., (their oldest was born about 1898) Mr. "Blake" kand Miss "Vickey" were next door neighbors to our family, the Motts from 1931 until 1945. The old Sawyer home is locate on the Sandflat to Fulton Road about 1/4 of a mile south of U.S. Highway 43 near the present location of the Okalona Methodist Protestant Church.
I have many fond memories of the Sawyer family because we shared many of the same hardships of the 1930 depression years. They had four daughters and one foster son . The foster son was named John Columbus "Jackie" Wilson. Jackie was only two years older than myself. He and I were great buddies during our teenage years.
Jackie's mother was Mamie Wilkerson who appears to have been a sister to your father and a neice to Miss"Vickey" . Mamie married John Wilson. John and Mamie divorced in the early 1920s' and Jackie came to live with Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer at the age of about five. Jackie always referred to them as Uncle "Blake and Aunt "Vickey". Jackies mother Mamie came to see Jackie several times during the late 1930s' often staying several days with the Sawyers. Jackie became a Radar Technician in the Signal Corps in World War11. After the war, he earned a B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering from LSU at Baton Rouge. Worked for the Dresser-Atlas Corporation in Houston Tx. for many year, retired and is presently living in Houston. Your Aunt Essie after her marriage to Mr. "Benny" Day, bought our old home near the Sawyer place in 1946 and lived there until her death in 1970. Her son Albert, by her previous marriage to Massey Walker, continued living our old place until his death in 1945. I am sure that you know that all of Essie's family is buried at Bassetts Creek Cemetery.
Now back to Miss "Vickeys" children. Miss "Vickey's" oldest daughter was named Hattie. She was born about 1898 in Clarke County near Fulton. She married Pearl Furr. They had one child born and died on Aug. 26,1921. "Miss Hattie" was probably the first lady telegrapher in Clarke County.
After finishing telegrapher's school, she worked for the railroad for a short time before the depression hit. She was unemployed during the depression years and stayed at home with Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer. Pearl Furr, her husband, was a steam shovel operator and worked away from home most of the depression years. Because of her telegrapher training, "Miss Hattie" became depot agent for the Southern Railroad Company at Fulton Alabama during the early 1940's and continued to work there until she retired until sometime around 1965. When "Miss Hattie" became agent at Fulton, she moved to Fulton and brught "Miss Vickey" and "Mr. Blake with her. "Miss Vickey" died in 1948 and "Mr. Blake" died there in 1960. Both are buried in the Bassetts Creek Cemetery. "Miss Hattie lived a number of years after retiring, most were spent in the Arrington Nursing Home in Jackson, Al. suffering from Alzheimers. She is also buried at Bassetts Creek in an unmarked grave near her mother and daddy.
The second oldest daughter was named Ada Jane. She married Archie Fendley, my mother's brother. For detailed information on this family, I am enclosing a computer print-out of my research.
The third oldest girl was named Gladys. She was born in 1908 and died in 1978. Gladys was an R.N. and served as a 1st Lt. in the U.S. WW11. She married W.C. Scott and had two or three childen. After WW11 Gladys and her husband made their home in New Orleans and I did not get to know the Scott family. Gladys and her husband are buried at the Bassetts Creek Cemetery.
The fourth and youngest girle was named Oscllo Juanita. Everyone called her "Baby" even after she was grown. Juanita married N.L. Wilson (no relation to Jackie) sometime in the late 1940s' or early 1950s'. They lived in Fulton for a few years after they married but then moved to Tuscaloosa, Al. where N.L. was employed. Juanita died in 1971. Juanita and N.L. had one daughter named Jane. After moving to Tuscaloosa I lost track of the famly.
The person listed below is the daughter of Ada Sawyer Fendley and a granddaughter of Victoria Osborne Sawyer. She has an interest in the family geneaology and may be able to supply you with addresses of some of these people. ( she did not answer my letters) Mrs. Betty Burge 110 Deas St. Jackson, Al. 36545 Tel. 205 -246-2279 Hardy and Mary Magdaline Osborn. They had two children that I knew, Walter and Lillie. I think that there were others. Mr. Walter Hardy married Lenora Jackson who was the oldest daughter of Charles Burke Jackson, Jr. and Zilphia Jane Andrews. Walter and Lenora had two daughter that I knew, the oldest is nsmed Eunice. Eunice married Dick Wixey. She lives in the Greenwood Community four mles north of Grove Hill on U.S.43. David Keller who runs Kellers store in Greenwood is her son-in-law. The other daughter is Eula Cee. She married first Raymond Harper, second Willard Edge. Eula Cee lives in the Saraland-Chickasaw area. (she died somewhere around the time I received this letter) Miss Lillie Hardy married Maborn Jackson, the secon oldest son of Charles Burke JacksonJr. and Zilphia Jane Andrews. Mrs. Elvin C. Fendley,5113 Perrin Road, Mobile, Al. is a daughter of Lillie and Maborn. Adell and her husbad Elvin did extensive research into their family before his death and I feel sure thatshe would be glad to send you a xerox copy of her family records. (but she did not) I have her phone listed as 661-0245. (if she hasn't passed away by now she said she was moving back to Clarke Co. to be near her family) Rip Osborn (this family dropped the e)
I am familiar with only one of Mr. Rip and Miss Charlotte's children, Their son John. John married Alma Kelley, and they only had one son, Lionel. Alma died several years ago and John married Mildred Lucker. John's present address is Route 2, Thomasville, Al. 36784, Tel. 363-5161. John is presently about 85 years old and has a fairly good memory about the family. Perhaps you would like to visit him. His son Lionel lives in Thomasville, and is the manager of Delchamp's Food Store here in Thomasville. I told Lionel about your inquiry and I was going to send you some information on the family. He showed an interest in the family genealogy but said that hehas not done any research. I spoke with John on the phone and shared smething of your inquiry with him. He said that his grandmother Amanda was a Buckalew. I aso learned from him that Lafayette "Fate" Osborne (the e is used) and Amanda are buried in the Heley Cemetery at Fulton. From grave markers I obtained the following: Lafayette Osborne ,Pvt. 5th Alabama Regiment C.S.A. b. May 25, 1830 did July 16, 1916 Amanda Osborne 1835-1914
These graves are near the family plot.I lo noted the following Wilkerson graves.Robert J. Wilkerson b. Dec. 5, 1870 d.May , 1917. adjacent to this grave were the graves of five Wilkrson children marked only wth concrete slabs with no dates. The children's slabs were identified as Thomas Wilkerson. Berlielee Wilkerson, Minnie Wilkerson, Addie Wilkerson and Ida Wilkerson. At the foot of Ida's grave was an adult slab marked Grandmother Wilkerson. The Henley Cemetery contains one grave marked Henderson, no dates or other information. The Bassetts Creek Cemetery contains the following Osborn (e) graves. J. Tom Osborn b. 22 Feb.1867 d. 16 May 1947, M. Jane Osborn b. 29 May 1861 d. 19 Feb. 1948, Rip G. Osbon b. 11 Jan. 1877 d. 13 May 1941, Scharlotte Osborn b. 21 March 1883 d.4 Oct. 1960, Bell Osborne b.29 Aug. 1896 d. 17 Dec. 1896, Maggie Osborne b. 29 Aug. 1896 d. 4 Dec. 1936. Prehaps I have duplicated some information that you have, but better to do that than leave it out. On 17 Nov 1898 when Victoria A. was 23, she married Caleb Blake SAWYER, in Clarke Co., AL. Caleb Blake was born in Clarke Co., AL, in 1872. Caleb Blake died in/at Clarke Co., AL, in 1960; he was 88. Nickname: Mr. Blake.
They had the following children:
i. Hattie, 5th Cousin. Hattie was born in Near Fulton, Clarke Co., AL, abt 1898.
Hattie married Pearl FURR.
