Lynne (Whitehurst) Furr, 92, died Saturday, July 5, 2014 in Salem, Oregon. A memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Thursday, July 31, at First United Methodist Church in Salem, Oregon. Interment will be at Ebenezer Cemetery in Hickory Flat, Mississippi. Mrs. Furr was born February 19, 1922, to William Sydney and Arelia (Sweat) Whitehurst in Sheffield, Alabama. After she finished high school, she attended and graduated from Blue Mountain College, Blue Mountain, Mississippi in 1943 with majors in music and English. As a teenager she became active in choir in her school, church, and community, where she was frequently a soloist. Her love of music and singing continued throughout her life, even when she was no longer able to perform. During World War II she worked in New York City and the Panama Canal Zone for the U.S. Civilian Postal Censorship Department. In 1946 she married Howard L. Furr in Dallas, Texas. Three sons blessed their family. During their 67-year marriage they lived in Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Texas and in 1996 they moved to Salem from Bryan, Texas. Mrs. Furr was employed by Texas A&M University as the Thesis and Dissertations Editor at the Graduate College from October 1969 to October 1979. She was a member of the Methodist Church and the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She served as a Stephen Minister in her Bryan church and was a Hospice volunteer for 12 years in Texas and Salem. She is preceded in death by her husband, Howard L. Furr; sister, Elizabeth Hillman; and brother, Laney Whitehurst. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, David and Anne Furr of Salem; sons, Laney of Salem and Paul of Portland; grandson, Luke Furr of Salem; granddaughter, Sarah Golomski and her husband, John, of Salem; and many loving nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please consider an offering to First United Methodist Church in Salem, Oregon or, to the charity of your choice, in her honor. Arrangements are in the care of Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service of Salem Oregon.Endnotes
