Allen McDaniel "Mack" STARNES
(25 Jul 1847 - 26 Jul 1935)
Allen McDaniel Starnes, also known as "Mack" & "A.M.D." was born July 25, 1847 in Stanly County, NC and died July 26, 1935 in Cabarrus County, NC. He enlisted in the Confederates States Army at the young age of 15. He served in the 42nd Regiment, Company K, NC State Troops. This Regiment was famous for another private who served along side "Mack", Tom Dula (Dooley). Tom Dula was made infamous through the folk song "Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley" which details his involvement in the murder of Laura Foster. "Mack" enlisted after he learned his brother, John, who also enlisted with the CSA, had fallen ill. After the war, Mack returned home and continued farming. He was always an adventurer and gambler, spending time in the creek that ran through the family owned farm, prospecting for gold. He found several pounds of gold in the Rocky River and took his findings to the Charlotte Mint to have it made into gold coins and jewelery.
