Stephen Jefferson Furr's HomeDeath
In the death of John A. Evans at Nola last Thursday Lawrence, county lost a native-born citizen who was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him; a man who was one of the most progressive and substantial farmers of the county, and prominent, in all activities for community progress and upbuilding. Mr. Evans was beloved by family and friends and will be sorely missed by all those with whom he came in contact. His death was a great shock to relatives and friends, as he had been sick for only about two-weeks, efforts to prolong his life being of no avail due to a complication of troubles. Mr. Evans had reached the age of sixty-nine years and for the past thirty-five years had been a faithful steward in the Methodist church, though working at all times in all churches of his community and counting it a privilege to be of service to God and his fellow-man. The-Evans family is one of the best know families in the county, always to be found at the forefront of movements for county development and progress, especially in an agricultural way. The respect and esteem in which Mr. Evans was held was shown by the large crowd in attendance at his funeral and by'the many beautiful floral offerings from friends and loved ones. The services were held Friday afternoon at three o'clock at Little Bahala Baptist church with Rev. R. L. Walton, pastor of the deceased, conducting the services, assisted by Rev. Van Landrum, pastor of the Wesson Methodist church. Mr Evans is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mrs. G. W. Ivy of Brookhaven; Mrs. L. W. May of Nola and Mrs. Sharp Branton of Columbia; five sons, Jeff, John, Frank and Alton of the Nola community and G. W. Evans jr., senior at Copiah-Lincoln Junior College at Wesson. Pallbearers: at the funeral service were college mates of the last-named son. Two sisters, Mrs. W. L. Ainsworth, Brookhaven; Mrs. P. E. Thompson, Newhebron; with five brothers, G. W.,A. E., and W. P. Evans of Nola; J. H. Evans of Hazlehurst and R. L. Evans of Collins also survive, besides a large number of other relatives and a host of friends. The tender sympathy of friends throughout the county is extended to the surviving loved ones.Endnotes
