Notes
Death
Geraldine Wren Furr passed away peacefully on Friday, September 6, 2013. She was 90 years old, having celebrated her birthday in December 2012. She was a well know citizen of Oxnard for over 6 decades, having served as City Treasurer, and a member of City Council, as well as being active in numerous civic organizations. A native of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Mrs. Furr attended the University of Oklahoma and moved to Ventura County with her family in 1942. She moved to San Francisco for a year, but returned to Ventura County and was employed by the City of Oxnard as a clerk-typist in 1949. Two years later she was the city's deputy treasurer. She held that position until 1957 when she was appointed treasurer and was then elected to that post in 1960. She won re-election to the post of city treasurer for the next 20 years until she retired in 1980. A few years later, Mrs. Furr was the top City Council choice by Oxnard voters, in November 1988. She felt that serving on the City Council provided her the opportunity to pay back the residents of Oxnard for their support of her and her husband Roy Furr who was a member of the Oxnard Fire Department. Mrs. Furr won numerous honors for her vast civic work, being named 1974 Woman of the Year by the Oxnard Soroptomist Club and 1976 Woman of the Year by the California Women in Chambers of Commerce. She enjoyed a year as President of Municipal Treasurer's Association of the United States and Canada. Oxnard always held a special place in Mrs. Furr's heart. Mrs. Furr was preceded in death by her parents, George and Claudell Wren, her husband, Roy Furr, and her brother Eugene Wren. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Marie Wren, Fillmore and Bessie C. Lovin, Colorado and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephew, and a great-great-niece. Services will be held at Reardon Funeral home 511 North A Street Oxnard, CA 93030 at 10 a.m. on Thursday, officiated by Jonathan Mulford. Burial to follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park 5400 Valentine Road Ventura, CA 93003. Geraldine has been Entrusted to the care of Family Owned Reardon Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to the Assistance League, a favorite charity of Mrs. Furr's.Ventura County Star, Camarillo, California, September 11, 2013
