Death
W. Robert Furr Jr., 85, of Newton passed away on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at his residence. Born December 5, 1925 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late William Robert Furr Sr. and Edna Leona Little Furr. Mr. Furr retired as a health inspector for Catawba County and formerly Lincoln County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II, and was a member of American Legion Post 16. Mr. Furr graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Harwell Furr; a daughter, Nancy Herman; and sisters, Gilbreta F. McGee and Juanita F. Robinson. Survivors include brothers, Lowren Furr of Charlotte and Cyril L. Furr of Newton; a sister, Vivian F. Abernathy of Newton; grandchildren, Robin Mahacek of Conover, Tammy Simpson of Columbia, SC and Nicole Meier of Peyton, CO; great grandchildren, Brittany Mahacek of Conover, Chance Kelly of N. Myrtle Beach, SC, and others; beloved best friend, Polly Kelly of Newton; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, November 25, 2011 in the Chapel of Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton. Rev. Fred Thompson will officiate and burial will follow in Eastview Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 16. The family will receive friends from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. on Friday at Willis-Reynolds. Memorials may be made to: Sipe’s Orchard Home, 4431 County Home Road, Conover, NC 28613.
