Death

Edward G. Mathis, 80, of Waldron, Arkansas passed away May 20, 2023 at his home. He was born October 18, 1942 to Margaret Raney and Edward Mathis, Sr. After high school, he joined the United States Army and served in the 101st Airborne Division. In October of 1963, he joined the United States Marine Corps where he served aboard the USS Enterprise and the USS Ranger. He served three tours in Vietnam aboard ship and in-country. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 27th Marine Division while serving in Vietnam. After being wounded in August of 1968, he returned home and began work at the Grandview Police Department in Missouri. Retiring to Waldron in 1980, he spent much of his time volunteering with the American Legion, VFW, 4-H Buckskinners and 4-H Shooting Sports team. He was a member of the Ouachita Woodcarvers and taught hunter's education for the Arkansas Game and Fish for many years. Ed would always make time to coach, teach, fish, hunt or tell stories. His love of the outdoors led he and his family and friends on many memorable adventures to Canada, Alaska, and other beautiful places. His legendary stories and sense of humor will be missed by all. Ed was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by Mary, his wife of 56 years, his daughter Laurie and son-in-law Mike Richardson, his daughter Jennifer and son-in-law Floyd Daniels, grandchildren Ty Richardson and wife Erica, Zoe Richardson and Henry Daniels and great-granddaughter Ava Richardson. Visitation will be held at Martin Funeral Home in Waldron beginning at 11 am on Wednesday, May 24th followed immediately by a memorial service at 2 pm. Interment will be at Lower Centerpoint Cemetery immediately following. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Fisher House Foundation at fisherhouse.org or the Lower Centerpoint Cemetery Fund at Chambers Bank.
