Death

Terry L. Higgins, age 74, of Hugoton, Kansas, died Tuesday, November 7, 2023, in Hugoton. He was born June 22, 1949, in Liberal, Kansas, the son of Allen Lee Higgins and Barbara Jean (Olinger) Furr. Terry, retired SSG E-6 U. S. Army Airborne Ranger, served our country honorably for twenty years and one day. He served in Vietnam, Germany, and Korea during this time. He received the Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Silver Star and 3 Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, an Army Commendation Medal with 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster and an Army Achievement Medal with 3 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters. Terry had an exemplary career with medals to prove it. He was very proud of his country. After the service, Terry returned to Hugoton and drove a truck for Stevens County Road and Bridge for 20 years until his retirement. He enjoyed collecting coins, trips to the casino, prospecting in Colorado, and hunting. He was an avid gun enthusiast, collector, and reloaded his own ammunition. Terry would show up to his appointments 30 minutes early, showing his respect for other people’s time. He enjoyed telling stories and would spend hours sharing his military experiences with others. One of Terry’s greatest joys over the years was watching his great-nieces and great-nephews experience the joy and magic of Christmas time. Terry is survived by his sister, Teresa Snyder and husband, Ken, of Andover; half-brother, Frank Furr and wife, Kathleen, of Hugoton; half-sister, Juanita Clark and husband, Albert, of Rolla; three nieces, Jennifer Cornelsen and Stephanie Littlefield and husband, Kasey, all of Andover, and Stacy Bond and husband, Karsten, of Wichita; and 10 great-nieces and great-nephews. Terry is preceded in death by his father, Allen Higgins; mother, Barbara Furr, stepfather, Bill Furr; brothers, Phillip and Darrell Higgins; half-brother, Tommy Furr; and grandparents, Sylvester and Geneva Olinger. Funeral service will be 10:00 AM on Friday, November 17, 2023, at the First Christian Church in Hugoton, Kansas, with Pastor Heath Kelley officiating. Interment will follow at the Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton with military rites conducted by Kansas Army National Guard Military Honor Guard and American Legion 8th District Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at Garnand Funeral Home in Hugoton.
