Death
Services for Sam V. Smith, of Wesson, are 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Hillcrest Church of Christ in Brookhaven with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is Friday from 5 until 9 p.m. at Riverwood Family Funeral Service and Saturday from 1 until 2 p.m. at the church. Mr. Smith, 96, died Jan. 15, 2009, at Hardy Wilson Memorial Hospital in Hazlehurst. He was born on March 9, 1912, to Jonce Smith and Mary McGee Smith. He was a member of Hillcrest Church of Christ, where he helped to build and serve as a church leader. He was ordained as an elder in 1981 and served until his early 90s when his health began to fail. He was a carpenter by trade, but a servant in life in God's Kingdom. Preceding him in death were his parents; a daughter, Janet Furr; his brothers, Claude B. Smith, Clyde Smith, Percy Smith, Clark Smith and Thomas Smith; and his sisters, Hallie Lea, Estella Hardin and Ina McCoy. Survivors are his wife, Irma Lofton Smith; a daughter, Mary Pannell and husband, James, of Brookhaven; a brother, Denver Smith, of Brookhaven; a son-in-law, Mike Furr, of Wesson; his four grandchildren, Todd Furr and wife, Tiffany, Kelly Stewart and husband, Brandon, Rusty Pannell and wife, Kara, and Alice King and husband, Jason, all of Brookhaven; and his nine great-grandchildren.Endnotes
