Randall PIERCE
(27 Apr 1769 - 30 Aug 1853)
HISTORY: It appears that Randall came to Mississippi at just about the time that Lawrence County was formed. By the reckoning of that time, he was already an old man (45, if he came in 1814). The most reasonable evidence, the 1850 US Federal Census, Lawrence Co., MS, page 427, indicates that he was born in North Carolina. We know that his birth date to be 27 April 1769. In any case, Randall found himself in either the Carolina's or Georgia in the latter part of the Eighteenth Century, undoubted a very exciting time and place for a young man. We find him in one record that seems to refer to him during this period. On a Georgia list of tax defaulters (Burke County, issue of October 30, 1790), is listed a Randall Pierce. The time and place are right. It was probably him. Obviously this could mean a number of different things, including the possibility that he couldn't afford to pay or that he had moved elsewhere. He married a young lady by the name of Mary/Nancy Whatley. There are many unanswered questions about their early life and there are few records from which to glean even a few meager facts.

LAND: From the writings of Luther A. Pierce, Jr. in "Randall Huckaby Pierce and His Descendants," page 10 - Randall settled north of the "Three-Chopped Way" by about ten miles and near the boundary of land which still belonged to the Choctaws. He was just within the Lawrence County line on the north at that time. This area later became a part of Lincoln County in 1870. It is approximately 6 miles SE of Wesson, MS. 12 miles NE of Brookhaven and 15 miles NE of Monticello. He was roughly 65 miles east of Natchez, the outstanding city in the South at that time. He was in the Washington Survey. Thus the Pierce lands are described as Township 8 North, Range 11 East - Washington Survey Plat maps on the Pearl River are dated 1810.
