He settled on 42 acres of his father Adam's land, west of a small stream now called "Miller's Branch". He bought more land until he had about 200 acres. He cast his first vote as a Democrat in 1840; although, his father and brothers were Whigs. He remained loyal to Virginia in the Civil War and served with the militia. May 8, 1895, he was buried on the south slope of "Ellison's Ridge" Monroe Co. WV, 1/2 mile and in full view of his home where he spent most of his life.
