In September 1862, William joined the Union forces in Unionville, Ohio. He was a member of Company D, 91st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. In the spring of 1863, in Fayettesville, Virginia, William contracted typhoid fever and nearly died. He returned home in July 1865. He was a cooper by trade. He hired on to a steamboat in the fall of 1866 and died in Shreveport, Louisiana on October 19, 1866. His son, Martin, the only known survivor of this three children, remained in Lawrence County the rest of his life.
