Death

Mrs. Arlevia Davis, or more familiarly known as Grandmama Davis, was the second child and first daughter of Henry and Mary Furr. Grandmama was born near Bahala church, which was then in Lawrence county, nowin (sic) Lincoln, Miss., on the 15th day of March, 1818, and died April 23, 1904. She was the beloved sister of four sisters and four brothers; she leaves only two sisters to mourn her death. She was converted and became a consecrated member of the Baptist church of Bahala, when very young, and afterwards moved her membership to Mt. Zion, where it remained until death. She became the charming bride of H. A. Davis when he was a youth of seventeen> she was his beloved wife for sixty nine years. She was the mother of five sons and four daughters, and Grandmother of fifty eight, and great Grand mother of thirty three children. The burial took place at the Davis cemetery. The funeral services were conducted by our much beloved divine, J. P. Hemby, of Hazlehurst. Many relatives and friends gathered together on Sunday evening, April 24, to pay the deceased the last tribute of respect, and to express sympathy to her bereaved family. If she had an enemy or possessed a fault, those who knew her were not aware of it. We regret with aching hearts for her to be, called to God’s throne so soon; but our loss is her gain and more joy in Heaven. Her noble life will ever be worthy of emulation, and we should all strive to fulfill our sphere in life as she has so faithfully done. May we all be consoled by saying:

Dearest Grandmama, thou hast
left us,
Here thy loss we deeply feel,
But ’tis God who has bereaved us,
He can all-our sorrwos (sic) heal.
O dear Grandmama we hope to
meet thee,
When the days of life are fled.
When in Heaven with joy to greet
thee,
When our farewell words are
said.
