Death
Bobbie Long Phillips, 92, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Asbury Care Center in the Aldersgate Retirement Community. We can envision her arriving at the “gate” and being welcomed by her Heavenly Father saying, “Welcome Home, good and faithful servant.” Mrs. Phillips was born in Monroe, GA on June 10, 1920 to the late Mr. Albert G. Long and Mrs. Clyde Long Webb. Later in life Mrs. Phillips moved to Greensboro, NC and met, fell in love and married Cloyce C. Phillips. After establishing a successful Western Auto Associate business in Darlington, SC, the Lord called Rev. Phillips into full time ministry with the United Methodist Church. He left his business and attended Asbury College, Emory University and Duke Divinity School to become an ordained Methodist minister. He served faithfully the Kentucky Conference and the Western NC Conference until his death on April 1, 1967. After Rev. Phillips’ death, Mrs. Phillips moved to Charlotte and was on staff at St. Luke United Methodist Church and later at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church. She later accepted a position as Parish worker at West Market Street United Methodist Church in Greensboro for fourteen years and was active in the women’s prison ministry for several years. Mrs. Phillips also served as Vice President of Church Women United for the state of North Carolina. She also served as Spiritual Life Leader in Conference and District United Methodist Women’s organizations, having been honored with five life membership pins. Mrs. Phillips participated in many Lay Renewal and Witness week-ends over the south. Leading retreats and teaching Sunday School in various churches were some of her favorite assignments. Mrs. Phillips contributed a month’s devotionals in “Seasons of Reverence”, a yearly devotional published by the United Methodist Women of Myers Park Methodist Church. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 11:00AM, Wednesday, May 29th at Myers Park United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Roth officiating. Graveside committal service will follow at 3:00PM, at Guilford Memorial Park, 6000 High Point Road, Greensboro, NC 27407 with Rev. Wayne Furr officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00PM to 8:00PM, Tuesday evening at Wilson Funeral Service. Mrs. Phillips is survived by three children who were her pride and joy, Angelyn C. Wiley and husband, Phillip, of Brooksville, FL, Joseph G. (Phil) Phillips and wife Linda, of Charlotte, Bobbie Furr and husband Wayne, of Cole Valley, IL; seven grandchildren and twenty one great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her husband of thirty years, Rev. Cloyce C. Phillips and a grandchild. Memorials may be made to The Fellowship Class or Stephen Ministry or Adult Plus, all of Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207.Endnotes
