Notes
Death
Rebecca “Becky” Altazan Starring, a life-long resident of Baton Rouge, passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at the Baton Rouge Rehab Hospital. She was born on October 21, 1943, the daughter of Neal and Myrtle Altazan. Shortly following graduation from Redemptorist High School, she began working for the Department of Transportation, where she met her husband of 56 years, John William Starring. Becky loved cooking, Facebook food recipes, playing cards with life-long friends and special time spent with her longtime neighbors. She was an avid sports fan, attending LSU football games with Johnny in their early years, and more recently watching every game on TV. Her favorite Tiger sport was baseball and she liked to remind her grandchildren of her time playing softball in her youth. Raised Catholic, she maintained a deep commitment to Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church and worked for many years at St. Joseph’s Academy. Becky had a warm personality and was a good listener, often encouraging those who dropped in for an impromptu visit. Most of all she loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great- grandchildren, all of whom spoke of her great hugs and her “snack drawer” that was always stocked for their visits! Becky is survived by her children, Renee Starring Furr (Brett), Stephanie Starring Hodges (Blake) and John Brent Starring (Kristin Helm). Grammy especially loved her seven grandchildren, Laura Furr Mericas (Christopher), Hayden Hodges (Maggie Meeks), Clayton Furr (Yvette Tabary), Cullen Hodges (Meghan Bergeron), Jessica Starring, Blaine Starring and Evan Starring; and three great-grandchildren, Dakota Hodges and James and Addie Mericas. Becky is also survived by her brothers, James Altazan (Mary) and Kenneth Altazan (Marcy) and her sister Deborah Altazan Johnson. Aunt Becky also had a special relationship with her seven nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John William Starring, her parents and her brother, Ronald Altazan. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 17, 2024, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 2250 Main Street in Baton Rouge, celebrated by Rev. Joshua D. Johnson. A Visitation will be held at the church beginning at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her memory may be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church or St. Joseph’s Academy. Becky was given loving care in the last months of her life by Vickie Battiste, Tonya Grant and Tish Thomas. Special thanks also to the staff of Baton Rouge Rehab Hospital and Dr. Brent Bankston and Dr. Denzil Moraes.Endnotes
