Death

Melba Black Vest, age 93 of West End died Wednesday (September 20, 2017) at Tara Plantation in Carthage. Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Friday at Culdee Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall. A native of Moore County she was a daughter of the late W.E. and Myrtle McKenzie Black. Melba worked at JP Stevens for many years and later in life as a greeter at Walmart. She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer F. Vest and two children Elaine Vest and Wesley Vest. She is survived by her daughter Beverly Furr and husband Larry of West End; son James Vest and wife Judy of Winter Garden, FL; sisters Carolyn Smith of Pinehurst, Betty McKenzie of Aberdeen; brother Norman Black of Southern Pines; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Doris Moore Scholarship Fund, 916 Highway 73, West End, NC 27376 or to FirstHealth Hospice Foundation, 150 Applecross Rd, Pinehurst, NC 28374.
