Death
James Monroe Ray, 88, of Pampa, died September 7, 2017 in McLean. Services will be 10:00 AM Monday, September 11, 2017, at Hobart Baptist Church, with Pastor Mike Watson, officiating. Graveside services will be 2:00 PM Monday at Claude Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mr. Ray was born February 10, 1929 in Young County. He married Mary Jane Luttrell on June 24, 1950 in Claude. She preceded him in death on November 30, 2000 after 50 years of marriage. He later married Eva Jo Day on September 15, 2001. James had been a resident of Pampa since 1960. He was a cowboy and ranch foreman all his life, working on different ranches in the panhandle area. He served on the Lefors High School Board, was a member of the Top O’ Texas Rodeo Association, and First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Eva Jo Ray of the home; three sons, Jerry Ray of Amarillo, Tom Ray of Pampa, and Michael Ray and wife Melanie of Lefors; a daughter, Carolyn Furr and husband Albert of Saint Jo; two stepdaughters, Karen Hillman and Virginia Brantley and husband Lou, all of Pampa; two stepsons, Reuben Day and wife Susan of Amarillo, and Rodney Day and wife Troi of Pampa; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. James was preceded in death by his parents, John Martin and Ellen Ray; two brothers, Riley Ray and Johnny Ray; and a sister, Katie Killman. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the WRCA, Working Ranch Cowboys Association 408 SW 7th Ave., Amarillo, Texas 79101.Endnotes
