Death
WHITAKER JR.BURLINGTON Mr. Joseph Carroll "Joe" Whitaker Jr., 79, of 1921 Downing Drive, died unexpectedly Monday, July 2, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 5, 2001, at Front Street United Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. William C. Simpson Jr., the Rev. Duke Lackey, and Dr. G. Robert McKenzie. A native of Matthews, S.C., he was a son of the late Joseph Carroll Whitaker and Beulah Hancock Whitaker. He was a retired engineer with Western Electric, with 37 years of service, and a former employee of Quarry Hills Golf Club. He was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Builders Sunday school class. He was a former Scout Master, Eagle Board of Review, Silver Beaver, Brotherhood of the Order of the Arrow, twice led contingent of scouts to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a former member of Alamance Senior Golf Association and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Furr Whitaker of the home; daughters, Mrs. Pamela Whitaker Duff of Greensboro, Mrs. Elizabeth Whitaker Heal of Morehead City; grandchildren, Christopher Edward Heal of Raleigh, Julianne Elizabeth Heal of Morehead City, Bryan Russell Duff and Ellen Carroll Duff, both of Greensboro; and sister, Mrs. Carolyn Baxley of North Augusta, S.C. The family will receive friends after the service in the John Wesley room of the church. Memorials may be made to Old North State Council Boy Scouts of America; to Elon University; or to Front Street United Methodist Church. Rich & Thompson Funeral Service is serving the family.Endnotes
