Notes
Death
Gay Worrall Wood, age 90, passed away in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Sunday evening April 24, 2022. Gay was born in Hobart, Oklahoma on May 27, 1931. She was the wife of the late Reverend Charles ("Chuck") Amos Wood (married 60 years) and mother of Jeffrey Charles Wood, Lisa Wood Roberts (Stuart), and Susie Wood Furr (Joey). Gay was "GiGi" to five grandchildren: Kathleen "Katie" Furr Amos, Joseph Weldon ("Weldon") Furr, Jr., Anne ("Annie") Maurine Furr, Amy Elisabeth Fourrier, and Caroline Danelle Fourrier. She graduated from Oklahoma University where she majored in Performance Piano and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She began teaching piano lessons a year after her marriage to Chuck in 1955, and she continued teaching piano lessons for the next 67 years until at the age of 90 she became too sick to teach. After moving to Baton Rouge in 1970, she began teaching pre-k/kindergarten at Trinity Episcopal Day School and then at St. James Episcopal Day School, coming home in the afternoons to teach her piano lessons. She retired from teaching school after 25 years. She loved to tell stories of the many funny things kindergarteners said each day and to celebrate the talents of her decades of piano students. She was a long-time member and past Treasurer of the Baton Rouge Music Teachers Association, but her main service was to the Louisiana Federation of Music Clubs, where she devoted many years to junior piano festivals. Gay loved jazz, the symphony, public radio, OU football, and LSU baseball (watching intently the day before her death). She was an avid reader throughout her life, learning to adjust the font size as she aged, but not slowing down. She loved playing games of all sorts, and her age did not affect her skills. She would smirk as she quietly won nearly every game she played against her younger family members. She will long be remembered for her sharp mind that never failed right up to her death, for her sassy charm, for her faith, and for her unconditional and unwavering love of her family. Gay's was a life well-lived, and she is loved deeply. The family wishes to thank Dr. Vince Cataldo, Dr. Kenneth Civello, Dr. Dustin Denicola, Dr. Michael Rolfsen, and Hospice of Baton Rouge for their compassionate care and to thank all of their friends for their kindness, love and support. Visitation with Gay's family begins at 4:30 pm, and the celebration of her life will follow at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27th, at St. Alban's Episcopal Chapel, corner of Highland Rd and Dalrymple.
