Death

Leona Claire (Cook) Van Horne, 81, of Mansfield, went to be with her Lord on Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Leona was born on Sept. 15, 1934, in Dunlap, Iowa, to Raymond and Mabel (Pedersen) Cook. Leona graduated from Sacramento High School in 1951. A talented Roller Dancer, Leona met the love of her life, Donald C. Van Horne, at a roller skating rink in Sacramento, California. They were married on Sept. 13, 1953. Leona traveled the world with her Air Force husband. They retired in Dixon, California and together, with their son, opened Don’s Hobbies in Fairfield, California. In 1992, Leona and Donald bought their house in Mansfield, Ohio to live closer to family. Leona was a devoted member of Faith Lutheran Church LCMS. She was a reliable volunteer at all church functions. Leona is survived by her children, Leonard W. Van Horne and Dorothy Furr; two grandchildren, Allison (Brian) Meade and Joseph (Ruth) Furr; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Leonard R. Cook, of Goleta, California; one sister-in-law, Pauline Smith; one brother-in-law, William (Esther) Van Horne; and several nieces and nephews. Leona was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two siblings, Marilyn Wehman and William Cook. Family and friends will be received starting at 9 a.m. Friday, February 19, 2016 at Faith Lutheran Church, 1685 Lexington Ave, Mansfield. Memorial services will follow at 10 a.m. Interment will be at 1:45 p.m. in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Faith Lutheran Church.
