MONROE - Nelson Rance Rowell went to his heavenly home Saturday, December 5, 2015. Mr. Rowell is predeceased by his parents Mr. John Rowell and Mrs. Margie Price Rowell. Rance is survived by his loving wife of over 53 years, Jo Ann C. Rowell, children Annette R. Harris ( husband Rickey Mills), Nelson R. Rowell II (wife Tomalyn Rowell), Amy R. Cline (husband Gary Cline), and Cheryl R. Furr (husband Brian Furr). He also left behind a legacy in his beloved grandchildren Hannah Harris, Sam Harris, Whitleigh Allen, Trey Rowell, Preston Furr, Abbey Mills, Wyatt Rowell, Clemson Isaiah "Ike" Allen, and Clayton Furr. Mr. Rowell also leaves behind his baby sister, Mrs. Jo Ann Gordon and brother-in law Gaile Gordon. Rance worked in the textile industry before retiring to farm beef cattle in the Fairview/Unionville community. Known affectionately as the "Rowell Family Farm where we buy high and sell low", Rance nurtured a love of agribusiness to all who would lend an ear. Whether it was frequenting the Union County Livestock Auction, trading cattle at the Norwood livestock auction, baling hay for farmers near and far, Rance loved being outdoors on a large John Deere tractor. In his later years, Rance enjoyed spending time with other Southern gentlemen who understood and appreciated the worth of a long day's labor. He could easily be found talking trade at "The Cabbage Patch", the Unionville Barber Shop, at Bojangles for breakfast, or simply sitting outside his home with family and friends who would pass by and pull up a chair to chat. Rance also loved monitoring agribusiness on RFDTV and comparing notes with his fellow cattlemen at the Union County Cattlemen's Association where he was a long time member and had served in many leadership roles. He spent quality time volunteering with NC Cooperative Extension activities to further the role of agriculture in Union County. Rance was also known for his political banter and would challenge anyone who might have a differing opinion as he loved a great debate. Mr. Rowell was a member of Zion United Methodist Church where he served in many capacities over the years from being a member of choir, Sunday School Superintendent, and membership in his Sunday school class where he made many lifelong friends. Rance believed in service and living an example of a faith-based life in his church community and far beyond. Wherever he walked in the door, a cheerful grin was on his face and a true love of life provided an aura that was both tireless and infectious. Many thanks and appreciation are due to friends John Winchester and lifetime friend Jack Braswell with whom many tall tales were told. The family would like to also express gratitude for the medical care Rance received over the last years of his life. Doctors Kreshon, Suresh, and Evans who spent many relentless hours helping him live a high quality life despite his medical conditions. The family would also to extend many thanks to the medical staffs of Carolinas Medical Center Union and Novant for kind care over many years. The family will visit with relatives and friends Tuesday evening, December 8, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC 28112. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 9, at 2:00 PM at Zion United Methodist Church, 1521 Old Fish Road, Monroe, NC 28110. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
