Death
Services for Mr. Fred Jenkins, Sr. 85, former chairman (equivalent of mayor) of the Carthage City Commission and long time Carthage pharmacist, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 3, at Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Carl Cantrelle and Dr. Charles G. Dodson will officiate. Interment will follow at Restland Memorial Park. Mr. Jenkins died Wednesday, October 31, at Panola General Hospital. "He was a very nice man," recalled Carthage City Commissioner John William Cooke. "I used to go to his pharmacy and have sodas when I was a kid. He really did a lot for Carthage. We can thank people like him for the great city we have today." Cooke's father, Jack V. Cooke, served with Jenkins of the Carthage City Commission. Born September 17, 1905 in McKinney, he was the son of Milford and Ollie Furr Jenkins. He graduated from the Baylor College of Pharmacy in Dallas and had owned and operated Jenkins Drugs in Carthage for 43 years until his retirement in 1976. In addition to serving on the Carthage City Commission, he was a charter member of the Carthage Rotary Club and was a past president of the club. He also had attained a perfect attendance record in the Rotary Club for 47 years. He was a member of the Texas Pharmaceutical Association and was a former member of the Board of Stewards at the First United Methodist Church of Carthage. He married Mary Boswell on May 29, 1927. Survivors include his wife, Mary B. Jenkins of Carthage; one son, Raymon Jenkins, Jr. of Arlington; one brother, Roy Jenkins of McKinney; three sisters, Marie Story of Sulphur Springs, Anna Lee Grace of Dallas and Metta Johnson of McKinney; and four grandchildren.Published in The Panola Watchman, November 4, 1990
