Death

Jane Furr Whiteside passed away peacefully on April 10, 2021, at age 91. A resident of Indian Land for almost 58 years, Jane’s life was characterized by her love for her Lord and for her family. Jane was born in Mecklenburg County, NC, on June 9th, 1929, to parents Luther Cardell Furr and Leona Honeycutt Furr. Her childhood held many happy memories of living on Carmel Road and attending school with friends at Sharon School. In 1945, she married John Truman Whiteside of Indian Land, a Navy veteran of World War II, and settled in South Charlotte. Their marriage lasted 55 happy years until he went to be with the Lord in September, 2000, and produced 5 children, including a set of twin boys. Her children fondly recall their Mom’s unselfish love and dedication to them not only through their formative years, but throughout their lives. One of their favorite memories is walking through her back door and saying, “Mom, I’m home!” and always hearing her answer. From keeping a tidy home, to baking homemade biscuits and cakes, to gardening and canning hundreds of quarts of fresh vegetables, one soon realizes Jane gave tirelessly of herself not only to her immediate family but also to her aging parents who lived next door. Whether it was serving as a Den Mother to Cub Scouts, acting as a homeroom sponsor, or simply being present in the stands at their many athletic games, each of her children fondly remembers their Mom’s steadfast support. Her capacity to love only grew as grandchildren and later great-grandchildren were added to the family, and they will forever carry that love in their hearts. Jane’s love for children extended beyond her own family to her much loved Pineville Church of the Nazarene, where she was a member for over 75 years. She took great pleasure in her many years of teaching Sunday School, VBS, attending District Assemblies and NIROGA conferences. Most of all, Jane faithfully supported foreign missions through her local church, as well as missionaries she and J.T. met through JAARS. Some of her fondest memories were of the two occasions she traveled to Lisbon, Portugal, for Work and Witness trips. Jane was always ready to vacation at the beach with her family and enjoyed going to Disney World with her grandchildren. Jane was briefly employed by the Lance Corporation, Celanese Corporation, and Smith Enterprises, but she dedicated most of her life to her family and church work. Jane is survived by her remaining three children, Nancy Whiteside Moore (Tom) of Indian Land, Ralph Whiteside (Regina) of Indian Land, and Judi Whiteside Smith (Wyn) of Rock Hill, as well as daughterin-love Kathy W. Whiteside of Clover, eight grandchildren, John Moore (Ashley), Sharon M. Testerman (Chip), Karrie W. Crocker (Seth), Kelly W. Sides (Matthew), Maribeth W. Haynes (Jon), Jennifer W. Cox (Jason), Jonathon Whiteside, Ryan Smith, and Kyle Smith, and was blessed beyond measure with 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Bobby Furr (Kathy) of Indian Land. Jane was preceded in death by her parents, husband J.T, sons John “Luke” Whiteside and Roger Whiteside, and her brother Billy Furr. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the many friends and extended family members who have lovingly supported Jane and them with heartfelt calls, cards, and prayers throughout recent years. Palmetto Funeral Home at 2049 Carolina Place Drive in Fort Mill will host the family visitation in their chapel on Wednesday, April 14, with the family receiving friends from 1:00-2:00pm, followed by a celebration of life service at 2:00pm, which will be live-streamed. The committal service will be at Grandview Memorial on Cherry Road in Rock Hill.
