Death
MATTHEWS - Mr. Raeford Eugene "Ray" Hartis, Sr., 86, died Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at Levine Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd Funeral Home, 6525 Old Monroe Rd., Indian Trail. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn East Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Mr. Hartis was born May 12, 1927, son of the late Jesse Eugene and Ethel Viola Furr Hartis and was a lifelong resident of Matthews, NC. He was very involved in the Boy Scouts, from a child through adulthood, and was a recipient of The Silver Beaver Award. Mr. Hartis was a WWII US Navy Veteran and retired from Cole Manufacturing. He was also a longtime member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hartis was preceded in death by his wife, Ann and by a son, Robert Edward Hartis. He is survived by his son, Gene Hartis of Leland, NC; daughter, Julie Hartis Kimball of Wake Forest, NC; brothers, Henry Hartis of Matthews, Jerry Hartis of Indian Trail and Madison Hartis of Bennettsville, SC; sisters, Mary Elizabeth Lemmond and Lamelle Haggerty, both of Weddington and Teresa Ozment of Apex, NC; and five grandchildren, Peyton Hartis, Braxton Hartis, Braden Hartis, Bennett Kimball and Avery Kimball. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Levine & Dickson Hospice House, 11900 Vanstory Drive, Huntersville, NC 28078 or to Autism Society of North Carolina, 505 Oberlin Road, Suite 230, Raleigh, NC 27605.
