Death
Katherine Dixon Furr passed away on March 13, 2013. Katherine was born February 9, 1926 in Richmond, Virginia but lived the great majority of her life in Wilmington, NC. She was preceded in death by her mother, Louise Konig Dixon and an infant sister, Margaret Catherine Dixon. Katherine is survived by her son, Chris Furr and wife Pam, grandson, Reverend Christopher Alton Furr and wife Katie, granddaughter, Julie Furr and her fiancé Joshua Outlaw, her great-grandsons Noah and Jude Furr, several cousins, including a very special cousin, Louise Perkins. Katherine’s family was a source of intense pride and joy in her life. All you needed to do was ask and she would tell you so! Katherine was a proud graduate of New Hanover High School class of 1944. She also graduated from the University of Georgia in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics, earned her licensure in Elementary Education from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and received a Master of Education in elementary Education from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 1981. She retired in 1989 after thirty-one years as a special education and first grade teacher with New Hanover County Schools. Over the years her family has encountered many whose lives were impacted by her years as a teacher. Katherine was a life-long member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council and the Altar Guild. She also worshipped and was active at Grace United Methodist Church. She was a longtime member of the Hanover Seaside Club and served as a board member, and was a member of the Beta Phi Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Over her life, Katherine was a member of and volunteered for many organizations: Church Women United, Crisis Line / Open House, NHRMC Auxiliary, Good Shepherd Soup Kitchen, Salvation Army, and many others. Katherine’s family will be eternally grateful to her many friends and caregivers for their concern and kindness shown to her during her last years. We especially express our love and thanks to Bess Shadrach, the staff at Davis Health Care, and the staff of Trinity Grove. A celebration of Katherine’s life will be held at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at 12 N. Sixth Street, Wilmington, NC at 11 AM on Saturday, March 16, 2013 with her grandson Rev. Christopher Furr and Rev. John Misenheimer presiding. The family will receive visitors following the service at the church. Interment will be at 1 PM at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will be at the home of Chris and Pam at other times. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you honor Katherine’s life by making a donation to your favorite charitable organization.Endnotes
