Death
Billy Gene Hubbard passed away on Sunday, December 5th, 2021. He was born in Coahoma County, MS, on May 8, 1932. He was the youngest of 8 children. He was the son of a sharecropper near Clarksdale, MS in a home between a cotton field and a peach orchard. He graduated from Jonestown High School, Sunflower Junior College, and Delta State University. After college, He joined the Navy for 2 years and was honorably discharged in December 1957. Then he moved to Ocean Springs in 1959 and began his legendary career teaching/coaching/administration and met the love of his life, Angelyn Furr. Billy was inducted to the Delta State University Sports Hall of Fame in 1994, Mississippi Delta Community College Sports Hall of Fame in 2002, and the Ocean Springs Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. He was also presented the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Distinguished American Award in 1994. Billy cherished time with his beautiful grandchildren. You could always find him at the ballpark, football field, or a dance recital. Billy was a remarkable man that had an impact on many lives with his quiet, kind spirit. He was admired and respected by many, young and old, and will be forever missed by all. Ocean Springs is a better place because of this legend of a man. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Angelyn Furr Hubbard; his parents, Glenn and Floy Hubbard; his brothers, Cecil Hubbard, Howell (Bro) Hubbard, and Douglas Hubbard; his sisters, Elizabeth Hubbard Mills, Arnita Hubbard Frederick, and Mary Frances Hubbard Fancher; and his precious daughter-in-law, Courtney Jalanavich Hubbard. He is survived by his two sons, Tracy Hubbard (Jade) and Mark Hubbard; his five grandchildren, Brock, Maura Kaye, Bray, Logan, and Cecil; his sister, Ann Hubbard Roberts; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Catherine's House for the outstanding care he was given by the staff. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Sprinkles of Hope, an organization established by his daughter-in-law, Courtney. Donations can be made at Charter Bank under Sprinkles of Hope, 2702 Bienville Blvd, Ocean Springs, MS 39564 or the Ocean Springs Athletic Foundation. A visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM with a 1:00 PM service on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at First Baptist Church of Ocean Springs, MS. Interment will be at Crestlawn Memorial Park.Endnotes
