Death
Joseph Cullen Hartley, Sr., 94, passed away Friday, November 18, 2011 after a brief illness. Mr. Hartley resided the past 17 years at St. Catherine's Village in Madison, MS. He was born January 14, 1917 in Barlow, MS the eldest son of Joseph Columbus Hartley and Jewel Furr Hartley. He was a graduate of Central High in Jackson and attended Mississippi College where he was on the golf team. A lifelong golf enthusiast, Mr. Hartley, along with his brother John, practically grew up on the Municipal Golf course in Jackson. He became the Jackson City Golf Champion at age 19 in 1936 and continued playing golf well into his 70's. During WWII, he enlisted in theU.S. Navy. Following the war, he began a career in the sporting goods business. He was the owner of Twin States Athletic Supply Company and eventually sold his business to Hale and Jones Sporting Goods. Mr. Hartley managed the downtown Jackson store and later the Westland Plaza location until his retirement. He was a longtime faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church in Jackson where he taught several Sunday school classes over the years and was also Chairman of the Deacons. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Minnie (Mac) McGuffee Hartley and an infant grandson, Joseph Cullen Hartley, III. He is survived by his sons, Joseph C. Hartley, Jr. and wife, Micki, of Natchez, MS, Rickey L. Hartley, and wife, Lynne, of Clinton, MS, and daughter, Pam Hartley Chauvin, and husband, Ron, of Coventry, RI, and brother, Dr. John D. Hartley of Ridgeland, MS, sister, Jewel H. Bayles of Jackson, MS, his grandchildren, Heather Chauvin Hallett, West Windsor, NJ, Jay Hartley, Cypress, TX and Leigh Hartley Pyron, Natchez, MS and Erin, Ashton, and Alden Hartley of Clinton, MS and 8 great grandchildren. Joe enjoyed spending his last 10 years at St. Catherine's Village with a special companion, Evelyn Wills. Visitation will be Monday, November 21, 2011 from 1:00 PM until 2:45 PM with services following at 3:00 PM at Lakewood Funeral Home in Jackson. Burial will follow in Lakewood Memorial Park. The family extends thanks to the staff of St. Catherine's Village for their love and support for a special place he called home.
