Death

CONCORD - Sylvia Diane Hopkins, 57, of 5225 Grand Canyon Road, died Monday, April 24, 2006, at her daughter's home. Service is at 1 p.m. Thursday at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel in Kannapolis with the Rev. Raymond Davis and Dr. Forbis Kivett officiating. Interment will be in Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Whitley's. She was born on Nov. 26, 1948, in Cabarrus County to the late Ralph Carpenter and the late Pauline Phillips Carpenter. She retired from Cabarrus County Schools, where she worked at Central Cabarrus High School. She loved her family and was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She loved baking cakes for many and loved the beach. The family would like to thank Dr. Thomas Steffens and his staff at NorthEast Oncology for the care they showed her and the family during her illness. Survivors include her husband, Roy Hopkins Jr.; two daughters, Jennifer Furr Christy of Rockwell and Melissa Furr Jones of Chesterfield, Va.; son, Jeff Drye of Concord; five grandchildren, Autumn and Alexis Drye, Ashlynn and Hunter Christy and Lanie Jones; sister, Linda Vanderburg of Kannapolis; and brother, Wayne Carpenter of Kannapolis. Headquarters is at 1920 Phaniels Church Road, Rockwell, at the home of Jennifer Furr Christy. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 500 E Morehead St. Suite 211, Charlotte, NC 28202-2694. Whitley's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
