KANNAPOLIS - C. Richard Anderson, 73, Kannapolis City Councilman and former Mayor of Kannapolis, passed away on Monday Nov. 16, 2009, at CMC -NorthEast. He was born July 26, 1936, in Bessemer City, the son of the late James Sylvester Anderson and the late Olivia Taylor Anderson. He was also preceded in death by a grandson James Anderson. Richard was a graduate of Cannon-A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis. He also attended Burton Institute of Charlotte, Catawba College and Southern Biscayne University. He holds a degree in business management. Richard was first elected to the Kannapolis City Council from 1991 to 1993 before becoming the Mayor of Kannapolis from 1993-1997. In 1999, he was once again elected to the Kannapolis City Council where he presently served. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1957. He retired in 1997 from Cannon Mills after 40 years of service. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he had served as chairman of the administrative board and a member of the J.L. Smith Sunday school class. He was active in the community having served on the board of directors of the Cabarrus County Rescue Squad, as a Boy Scout Master and chairman of the Kannapolis District Advancement Committee, volunteer for the American Red Cross, the United Way of Central Carolinas and the YMCA. He was also an avid golfer. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. R.J. Hammond, Rev. Curtis Parker and Mrs. Doris Buchanan. His body will lie in state at the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park with military honors by the Cabarrus Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Whitley's Funeral Home. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marion Moon Anderson, 4 children: Susan Anderson Jackson and husband Tripp of Raleigh, Tim Anderson of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Michelle Anderson Furr and husband. Wesley, of Concord and Amy Anderson Rosenstein and husband, Matt, of Champaign, Ill. nine grandchildren: Lauren Jackson, Caroline Jackson, Emily Anderson, Rachel Anderson, Jordan Furr, Corbin Furr, Catherine Furr, Olivia Rosenstein and Aaron Rosenstein.
