Jewell Elizabeth Burris Hopkins, 87, of 29533 Nelson Mountain Road, Albemarle, died at 2:35 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009 at Stanly Regional Medical Center.Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Hartsell Funeral Home-Albemarle. At other times the family will meet at the home of her daughter, Susan Stokes, 1009 Ridge St., Albemarle.Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at First Lutheran Church, where she was a member. The Rev. John W. Futterer will officiate and burial will be in Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.Born Feb. 13, 1922, in Stanly County, she was the daughter of the late Adam Aaron and Maggie Elizabeth Efird Burris. A graduate of Millingport High School, Jewell and her twin sister, Geneva, played on the Girls' Championship Basketball team. She and Geneva attended Appalachian State University where they were majorettes. Jewell worked as a legal secretary for her husband, taught in the Albemarle City Schools, and worked at the Stanly County Courthouse. Later she was owner/operator of J F Variety. She loved the outdoors and was an avid gardener.She was preceded in death by her husband, Samp Craig Hopkins, Sr., who died in 1991, and six sisters, including her identical twin, Geneva Tucker Boger in 2001.She is survived by a son, Samp Craig Hopkins, Jr. and Cindy, of Albemarle; two daughters, Susan (Hopkins) Stokes and husband, Doug, and Patti (Hopkins) Furr and husband, Duke, all of Albemarle; eight grandchildren, John Deere and wife, Cindy, Heather H. Parnell and husband, Charles, Maggie Hopkins, Ross Stokes, Zane Stokes, Leigh Ellen Furr of Albemarle, William Furr and Ross Hopkins; and five great-grandchildren.Memorials may be made to: Hospice of Stanly County, 960 N.
