Mr. William Rodney Gillie, 61, departed this world June 28 after a courageous four year battle with cancer surrounded by his family and friends. Rod was born in Danville, VA the son of the late Moezelle Murphy and Wilbur Wright Gillie. He attended George Washington High School in Danville and from there he subsequently spent 4 years in the Air force serving in Southeast Asia. Rod excelled in the progression of telecommunications throughout his career. At the time of his death he was employed by Wesbell Technologies in Durham. In addition to his professional accomplishments he was greatly admired as an ACC and High School baseball umpire for 40 years. He was recently honored by coaches, players and fellow umpires, many of which he mentored throughout his career. Rod was highly regarded on and off the field for his professionalism, as well as his unforgettable personality. “Uncle Rod” as he was affectionately known to everyone was a devoted husband, father, brother and papa. Rod is survived by his wife of 41 years, Patsye Duquette Gillie; a son, Brian Gillie and wife, Dianne of Durham; two daughters, Jennifer Gillie of Durham and Amy Gillie and partner, David Furr of Durham; two brothers, Joe Gillie of Delray Beach, FL and Jimmy Gillie of Danville, VA; and his grandson, Noah Cameron Furr, two nieces, Cress and Heather Gillie of Danville, VA and one uncle, Melvin Murphy of Eden. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham with Rev. Tim Williford officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service form 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Duke Hospice and Home Care 4321 Medical Park Dr, Suite # 101, Durham, NC 27704 and The Independent Animal Rescue, PO Box 14232 Durham, NC 27709.
