Katherine Lee Jackson Butler
****************************************
With one last Happy New Year! Katherine Lee Jackson Butler died quietly on Jan. 1, 2009, in Palm Springs, California. She was born on July 18, 1915, in Oxford; the daughter of James Lee and Kate Furr Jackson. Her grandparents were the Rev. James Lee and Willie Womack Jackson, and James Stacy and Mary Morrison Furr. Katherine made her home with Grover and Lillian Jackson Johnson in Oakland, Miss. She graduated from Northwest Mississippi Junior College and attended Delta State College. Katherine met the handsome tennis player from Mississippi State, Grady Wolfe Butler, on a lovely Sunday in March 1932, when he performed a classical trombone solo at Oakland Methodist Church. They were married on Sept. 8, 1934, in Grenada at the home of her cousin, Miss Lizzie Horn, and received guests at the home of his parents, George W. and Amanda Cousart Butler. Katherine honored her heritage as a member of Jamestowne Society; Order of Descendants of Colonial Cavaliers; Colonial Dames XVII Century; Order of Scottish Dames; Daughters of American Colonists; and Dames of the Court of Honor. She served the Daughters of the American Revolution as James Gilliam Chapter Regent, Mississippi Society Treasurer and Librarian, and NSDAR Museum Docent. Her Mississippi ancestors were early settlers in Lafayette, Pontotoc, DeSoto (now Tate), and Tallahatchie Counties. Katherine was active in civic organizations everywhere she lived. When they returned home after Grady retired, she served on the Town Board of Oakland, the Boards of Oakland Library and Oakland Cemetery, and Yalobusha County Committee for Home Health Nursing. She was widowed by Colonel (USA Retired) Grady W. Butler, a decorated veteran of World War II and Korea, on Valentine's Day eve 1984, the year of their 50th anniversary. She was also preceded in death by her dear siblings, James W. Jackson and Willie Locke Jackson. Mourning the loss of her unfailing love and wit are her children: William Grady Butler; General (USAF Retired) George Lee and Dorene Nunley Butler; and Dr. Thomas A. and Anne Butler Hyde. Katherine gave her heart to Dorene and Tom a half-century ago. Bill, Lee, and Tom are Vietnam veterans. She adored her lively grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Brett and Patti Lybrook Butler, their children, Madison, Colleen, Jack and Katie; Michael and Lisa Butler Herring, their children, T. J. and Theo; Thomas and Carri Payne Hyde, and their children, Katherine, Emily, and Thomas III. The family wishes to thank wonderful friend, Margaret Jean Ross; soloist Briana Logan of Ole Miss; Sam and Flora Vance of Herron House, Oakland; and the staff of Dickins Funeral Home, Batesville. Right Reverend Cathron Camp officiated at graveside services for Katherine on Jan. 8, 2009, at Oakland Cemetery where she rests under a great oak tree with beloved family. Dickins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
