Houston Alexander Yow, 79, of 20518 St. Martin Road, Albemarle, N.C., died at 10:54 a.m. Saturday, Jan, 26, 2008 in Stanly Regional Medical Center.He was born Saturday, March 3, 1928, in Stanfield, N.C., to Jack Daniel and Lillie Mae Furr Yow.On April 16, 1949, he married Ora Lee Burgess, who survives. He was preceded in death by infant twin daughters Jeanette and Annette Yow Jan. 3, 1952.He was a 1945 graduate of Endy High School.He served in the United States Army from April 1946 to October 1947 and was a medic in Japan from November 1946 to September 1947. He was a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne. He retired in Aug. 1981 after 33 years with the N.C. Department of Transportation.He was a morning walker at Stanly Commons, enjoyed watching NASCAR on TV and working with cars, especially his 1939 Ford.He is survived by a daughter, Amelia Ann Yow Poplin and husband, Claude Michael “Mike” Poplin of Albemarle; a brother, J.D. Yow of Albemarle; and his canine companion “Bud.” He was a member of Barbee’s Grove Baptist Church, a deacon, a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class where he served as secretary for many years, and a former choir member.Special thanks to Walter for taking care of us and helping us to KEEP THE FAITH.There was a private graveside service.
